Meet the Weoley Hill Committee

Below is a short message from each member of the Weoley Hill committee. If you are ever in need of any information, then please do not be afraid to approach one of the below.

President
Simon Skett

Chairman - Ross Manders

As Chairman, it is my responsibility to oversee the entire running and welfare of all aspects of the cricket club and overall management of the club officers. I undertake this role with great pride.

I first arrived at WHCC as a handsome young boy in the mid-1980s when my dad started playing for the club. I’ve always been an active member including being Club Captain.

I’ve always enjoyed the social side that our club offers including many tours over the years. Current, never to be beaten Bottle-Walking record holder. Spectacularly adept at getting injured on and off the pitch.

Current playing status: Retired hurt!!

Vice-Chairman - Guy Davies

I look after the compliance and regulatory aspects of the club maintaining the Club Mark standard, through ensuring we provide the correct information into the various ECB systems, especially Safe Hands.

I also curate our efforts to maintain a development plan so that we can align to ECB requirements and work with other committee members on identifying and progressing grant applications to supplement the club's income. The role also looks after the maintenance and revision where necessary of the Club's constitution and the various policies we need to have in place to ensure that reflects the regulatory standards now demanded of a sports club.

Club experience: I've been playing for Weoley Hill since the summer of 2001, during which time I have remained resolutely useless as a cricketer; however, hard as it is to believe, I have actually topped scored for the club in two matches (needless to say both times our total score didn't get much above 100!

Chairman of senior cricket - David Barnickle

My current role is Chairman of Senior Cricket and I’ve been in post since 2019. I take an active role in junior coaching and help all Captains with team selection, ensuring that weekend cricket runs as smoothly as it can do. Having previously been the Bar Secretary for the best part of 20 years, I’ve also had the honour of being Club Captain. I have been at Weoley Hill since I was born and it’s been a huge part of my families life.

Love a Guinness, especially when listening to tales of cricketing success…usually Homer telling me how many runs he’s scored!!!

Reminded on a weekly basis that I’m still yet to score a ton (unbelievable I know)…but I’m fairly sure my efforts drinking a Yard of Organic Cider on Tour will never be beaten!!!

Hon Secretary - Luke Brown

I have been a member at Weoley Hill Cricket Club since 2002, firstly playing junior cricket and then senior cricket at the age of 13.  My roles at the club have been varied over the years, including coaching the junior section, being Sunday 1s and then Saturday 2s captain and now the Hon Secretary.  I absolutely adore fielding (I don’t) but talk a good game after getting out for not many most weeks.  I very much enjoy being down the club at the weekend; having fun with friends and it is great to see our players score big runs and take loads of wickets!

Social Secretary - Ben Homer

I facilitate and coordinate the social events for the club. I organise and run many of them, but would encourage all members in getting involved with running events.

I've been at Weoley Hill Cricket Club for coming up to 42 years, with the forthcoming season being my 35th playing year! Too many stories to tell but on one tour my forfeit involved running naked

around the boundary at Penzance Cricket Club - unfortunately it was bordered by a main road and my run coincided with a double decker buss driving past! 😂

Bar Secretary & Grounds manager - Kevin Bates

As Bar Sec I keep the bar stocked and its assets maintained, organise the cleaners and turn over cash / account info.

As Grounds Sec I try to strike a balance between our groundsmen and our players. Not easy. Also a cross-over with Bar Sec to arrange pitch / facilities hires to 3rd parties. The Ladies Rep is my saviour.

I first played for WHCC Colts in the 70's. Now I umpire. Most of what's in between is irrelevant. I'm the one with the long blonde hair on the black and white team photo. Calm yourselves ladies.

Ladies rep & Club welfare officer - Paula Bates

As ladies Rep I have a very quiet role at present.

Last year I joined Sean as a club welfare officer.

I have been around the fringes of the club since 1988, coming and going over the years. (Only chance I got to see my family at weekends!) I have been catering events and teas for approximately 5 years and am generally known as mother to all!

Club welfare officer - Sean McConvery

The main purpose of the role is to assist with the safeguarding and protecting of children and young people in cricket and to implement the ECB Safe Hands Policy and procedures. In doing so, the person undertaking the role of a Child Welfare Officer should have an understanding of child protection and how best practice and use of the Disclosure and Baring Services (DBS) checks can help prevent child abuse.

I have been a player and coach at Weoley Hill for approximately 20 years, I still occasionally play and am actively involved in other activities in and around the club these range from cleaning to helping with the ground. One of my fondest memories was a 3rd team game where we batted 1st and were 44 all out, but we went on to win the game.

Buildings and Facilities manager - James Simpson

In my role at the club I want to help people have a good time using the facilities and help maintain and ensure are in good working order and make people want to use the club.

I have been playing for the club since I was 14 in 2007 from when the junior side of the club merged with Kings Norton.

Fact about myself: To date only one trophy received at the club which was fielder of the year in 2013 which having seen my fielding since is unbelievable.

Social media and Marketing officer Nick Procter

This role is a new role to the committee for the 2023 season, as social media has become more prevalent, the club has decided that we need to focus further on our online presence and providing a good product to our members. Alongside overseeing our social media posts for the coming season, I am also responsible for sponsorship and working with the local community to develop partnerships that benefit the cricket club and businesses in the local area.

I have been at Weoley Hill since moving to Birmingham in 2016 and have been an active player, coach and committee member in the last 7 years. Regularly found drinking a pint of venom in the clubhouse on a Saturday  night!
